RoMed Klinik Wasserburg and the kbo-Inn-Salzach-Klinikum, Wasserburg, Germany

Two clinics in one

In Wasserburg am Inn, one of the largest new hospital construction projects in Bavaria has emerged in recent years. Two separate healthcare institutions have been merged on site, the somatic RoMed Klinik Wasserburg and the kbo-Inn-Salzach-Klinikum for psychiatry and neurology.

About

A use of common functions saves resources, that’s why the two institutions are housed in two separate structures with a common reception area, cafeteria and canteen. They also have joint laboratory facilities and radiology unit. This is symbolised by the common entrance structure and the building shell with surrounding ceramic bands that hold the different components together.

The new building will create one of the most modern clinical centers in Bavaria, which can serve as a model for hospitals throughout Germany. The hospital has a total of 636 beds and has an above average number of single rooms in the somatic clinic, following the example set in neighbouring countries.

Healing architecture is one of the big trends in architecture and has been a guiding star in the planning for the new hospital. In the somatic department in the RoMed Clinic there has been a focus on design to give the one and two-bed rooms a bright and friendly impression.
The façade’s green and red colouring mirrors the surrounding countryside whilst large expanses of glass effectively bring the natural world into the buildings.

The historical complex of the kbo-Inn-Salzach-Klinikum was built in a pavilion style and is located in a park-like environment. The "clinic in the park landscape" also serves as the guiding theme for the design of the outdoor space, which seamlessly connects the old building with the newly built area. The new buildings were also built into the slope in the pavilion style which fits well with the existing construction on the hospital grounds.

Both clients are extremely satisfied with the new hospital, which will enhance the region with centralised healthcare of the highest standard.
